How does this Kundali Milan calculator work?

Kundali Milan (guna milan) compares the bride's and groom's birth stars across eight kootas, awarding up to 36 points. Pick each person's Nakshatra and Rashi (moon sign) and the engine scores all eight kootas using the classical Ashtakoota rules. The Nakshatra and Rashi are all that is needed — the score does not depend on the exact date, time or place of birth.

This is the same matching engine that scores every profile pair on MatrimonyTrust — explained in full in How Horoscope Compatibility Scoring Works. Tamil families matching by the 10-porutham system can use the Thirumana Porutham Calculator instead.

What do the 8 kootas check?

Each koota weighs one dimension of compatibility — temperament (Gana), mutual attraction (Vashya), health of the lineage (Nadi) and more, with heavier kootas carrying more points. Frequently asked questions

How is the Kundali Milan score out of 36 calculated?

Ashtakoota matching awards points across eight kootas — Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8) — for a maximum of 36 gunas. Each koota compares the bride's and groom's birth Nakshatra and Rashi. The calculator sums the points exactly as a traditional guna milan chart would.

How many gunas should match for a good marriage?

Tradition holds that below 18 gunas the match is not recommended, 18 to 24 is acceptable, 25 to 32 is very good, and 33 to 36 is excellent. Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7 points) dominate the total, which is why a low score usually traces back to one of those two kootas.

Can I check kundali matching by name only?

Name-based matching is a rough approximation and not reliable. The gunas are determined by the birth Nakshatra and Rashi (moon sign). This calculator works directly from each person's Nakshatra and Rashi, so those two details are all you need.

Why is the koota-by-koota breakdown locked?

The free calculator shows the overall guna score and verdict. The koota-by-koota points — including the decisive Nadi and Bhakoot results and dosha cancellation checks — are part of a MatrimonyTrust profile, where every person is phone-verified. Creating a profile is free and takes about two minutes.

What about Manglik dosha — is it included in the 36 gunas?

No. Manglik (Mangal) dosha is assessed separately from guna milan, by examining Mars in each birth chart. A pair can score high on gunas and still need the Manglik check. MatrimonyTrust does not calculate Manglik — each member states their own Manglik status on their profile, and you can filter and set partner preferences on it.
