How does this porutham calculator work?

Tamil marriage matching compares the bride's and groom's birth Nakshatras across ten classical checks — the 10 poruthams. Pick each person's birth star (Nakshatra) and Rashi (moon sign) and the engine evaluates all ten poruthams using the traditional star-pair rules. The star pair is all that is needed — the score does not depend on the date, time or place of birth.

The score out of 10 is the number of matching poruthams. Rajju and Vedha — the two checks most families treat as non-negotiable — are part of every calculation. This is the same matching engine that scores every profile pair on MatrimonyTrust, explained in full in How Horoscope Compatibility Scoring Works. North Indian families matching by the 36-guna system can use the Kundali Milan Calculator instead.

What do the 10 poruthams check?

Each porutham examines one dimension of married life — daily well-being (Dina), temperament (Gana), longevity (Rajju), prosperity (Sthree Deergha) and more. For a plain-language guide to every check, read Thirumana Porutham: All 10 Poruthams Explained or the deep-dives on Rajju porutham, Dina porutham and Yoni porutham. North Indian families can compare systems in Kundali Milan vs Porutham.

Frequently asked questions

How is the porutham score calculated?

The calculator checks all 10 Tamil poruthams — Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Sthree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha — by comparing the bride's and groom's birth Nakshatras using the classical star-pair tables. The score out of 10 is the number of poruthams that match. The same engine scores every profile pair on MatrimonyTrust.

What details do I need to check porutham?

Just each person's birth star (Nakshatra) and Rashi (moon sign). All 10 poruthams are determined by the star pair, so the Nakshatra and Rashi are all the calculator needs — no date, time or place of birth is required.

How many poruthams should match for marriage?

Tradition generally considers 5 or more matching poruthams acceptable, and 7 or more very good. But the count is not the whole story: Rajju and Vedha are treated as critical checks in most Tamil communities, and many families treat a Rajju mismatch as a hard stop regardless of the total.

Why is the per-porutham breakdown locked?

The free calculator shows the overall score and verdict. The porutham-by-porutham breakdown — including the critical Rajju and Vedha results — is part of a MatrimonyTrust profile, where each person's details are phone-verified. Creating a profile is free and takes about two minutes.

Is this calculator accurate for kundali (North Indian) matching?

This page runs the Tamil 10-porutham system. North Indian families use the 36-guna Ashtakoota (Kundali Milan) system, which MatrimonyTrust also computes on every profile — the right system is chosen automatically per community.
